He presents a scenario we see all too often: a management consultant visits a luxury hotel, observes a hotel doorman, and concludes, &#8220;Replace him with automated doors and a card access system &#8211; think of the cost savings!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On paper, it makes perfect sense. The consultant sees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Opening and closing doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking guest cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic security presence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greeting visitors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple tasks that technology could handle, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reality Check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But here&#8217;s where it gets interesting. As Sutherland notes, return to that same hotel a few years after implementing this &#8220;efficiency,&#8221; and you might find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Broken doors from misuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rough sleepers in the doorway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lost guests wandering confused<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A less prestigious atmosphere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased security incidents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Declining guest satisfaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened? Consider a retail security officer. The spreadsheet shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Standing at entrance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitoring for shoplifters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic customer service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So we think: &#8220;CCTV, electronic article surveillance, and automated doors could do all that!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But spend a day watching that officer, and you&#8217;ll see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Preventing conflicts before they escalate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping lost children find their parents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spotting maintenance issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building relationships with regular customers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing directions and assistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acting as a brand ambassador<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handling medical emergencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting vulnerable customers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deterring antisocial behaviour through presence alone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Technology Paradox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t misunderstand me &#8211; I love technology. My phone is full of the latest apps, and I get excited about new security innovations. But my enthusiasm for tech has taught me to be more discerning about its application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Personal Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I was evaluating a corporate reception where management wanted to replace their security officer with an access control system and CCTV. On paper, the officer just checked IDs and signed in visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But watching for a day, I saw them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Spotting tailgating attempts through social engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping delivery drivers with access issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing contractor inductions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifying unusual behaviour patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining relationships with tenants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handling fire alarm tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting facilities management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing first aid when needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No access control system could replace this human web of security and service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we rush to replace security personnel with technology, we need to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What invisible tasks are they performing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What subtle problems do they prevent?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What relationships do they maintain?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What social fabric do they weave?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Better Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of asking &#8220;Can we replace this person with technology?&#8221;, we should ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>How can technology support and enhance their capabilities?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What tasks truly benefit from automation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can we free up our security personnel to focus on what humans do best?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective security solutions will always combine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Human judgement and intuition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technological support and efficiency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contextual understanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So next time you&#8217;re looking at your security budget and thinking about automation, remember the hotel doorman paradox.
