I see so many companies that jump up and down when they sign off a brand new contract, only to lose it 3 years later or worse, have it terminated mid-contract term, for a failure of service.

Why does this happen, and what can be done to avoid it?

We are all well aware that there is a disconnect between Sales, who promise the Earth to win a contract, and Operations, who have to try and deliver on those promises. Regardless of how unrealistic. There are, however, standards of service that every operations director and their team needs to focus on, to ensure that a successful client relationship is built and maintained.

Early Days

Show how much you value their custom. Have the MD/CEO take part in the first couple of progress meetings.

Train Your Staff

Make sure you site train enough officers to cover unexpected blowouts. Yes, it dents the bottom line, but utilise your bench team if you have them. It looks bad if an officer who does not know the site unexpectedly arrives to cover a shift.

Schedule Regular Visits

Get your contract/operations manager to have regular site visits and regular, at least weekly, video meetings with the client to make sure you are not dropping the ball somewhere.

Make sure that your supervisory staff/night mobile team pay regular visits out of hours, as well if applicable, and ensure that these are recorded in the site OB.

Befriend Your Client

There is little wrong with your operations management taking the client out for lunch after month 1 and 3, etc., etc. Building a close relationship with the client is priceless. Make the client a friend.

When problems arise, and they will, a friend is more likely to work with you to sort things out. If a close relationship is not there, the client is more likely to send unpleasant emails to you and the contract relationship will be damaged.

Get Your Assignment Instructions Right

Go through the assignment instructions carefully with every member of your security team and make sure they are aware and happy about their responsibilities. Make sure you know them better than your officers, and ensure that they are not generic, cut-and-paste documents.

A rule of thumb: Assignment instructions should have enough detail and content to ensure that an officer who has never been to the site before will know all that they need to do in any shift, from reading and referring to the AIs.

Ongoing

Prioritise Staff Welfare

Look after your site security officers, and take care of their welfare. If you upset one of your security officers, you can 100% guarantee that they will moan to the client, hoping that this will get them what they want. It always looks bad, regardless of the validity of the gripe or the history of the security officer.

Maintain Regular Communications

If you can’t get to the site every week, make sure that a manager arranges a call or video meeting weekly. No matter how much you tell a client that they can call you anytime for anything, issues will fester until they speak to you, so nip things in the bud and keep those comms regular.

Recognise Your Team

Big up your security team. Talk to your client about you potentially nominating them for industry awards or even company recognition. A little praise goes a long way, and demonstrating that you value the work of your officers like this goes a long, long way for a client.

Become the Expert

Be your client’s security SME. Be free to advise them on changes of legislation that may affect their business, Martyn’s Law, etc etc. Offer to provide advice and guidance on all matters physical security, and do so freely.

Be Honest and Open

When things go wrong, let your client know FAST. DO NOT wait to hear it from them! If it was the fault of security, put your hands up and take responsibility. Investigate thoroughly, and advise on what you are going to do to mitigate the chance of recurrence. If it wasn’t the fault of security, do not remain silent. Support your officers and carefully explain the circumstances.

Easy Wins

If one of your security officers deals with a tough situation well or does something praiseworthy, let the client know pronto and reward a job well done.

Showcase the contract. Feature your client and site/s in your company newsletter. Get quotes from them and pictures. It is all great PR for you and makes them feel “loved”.

Let clients know if you are going to do some on-site training with your team (toolbox talks), and talk to them about the benefits of the training provided. (Value added.)

Big on-site event coming up? Offer your company’s services to provide additional assistance.

Big local event taking place? Make the client aware, and let them know that you can provide additional assistance. Advise and provide relevant intel if possible.

Recommended Reading: How To Cover Security Shifts Within Hours

The Bottom Line

None of this is rocket science, but it is easy to let standards slip if you have ops management that is stretched or not suitably engaged. To avoid this, ensure that your management is working to their own KPIs, or better still, using OKR methodology to set and measure their success. Build that effective client relationship fast, or lose the contract to someone who will.

Delivering On Your Promises Starts With The Right Team

Winning a contract is one thing—keeping it is another. And you can’t deliver exceptional service without exceptional people. GuardPass helps security companies hire, vet, and train the right officers from day one, so your operations team can focus on client relationships instead of firefighting staffing gaps.

It is a fact that there are over 10,000 non-ACS-approved security companies registered in the UK, and under 800 of those are ACS approved. So why do so many companies seem to be completely ignored?

Let’s go back to the formation of the Security Industry Authority’s Approved Contractor Scheme, what it was trying to achieve, and why it largely failed.

The Origins Of The ACS And Its Intended Purpose

The Private Security Industry Act 2001 was established after a series of tabloid scandals and stories involving, in general, some rather extreme criminal behaviours of some “bouncers” that were acting in a manner that would make the Krays wince. Its overriding objective was to better protect the public and remove the criminal element from the security industry.

Alas, other elements of the security industry’s operation took a back seat, or were forgotten altogether when the legislation was drawn up. The Government regulator and body responsible for enforcing the new rules and making the industry safer was the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

To encourage better behaviour from security service providers, they introduced an initiative designed to separate the wheat from the chaff and become the gold standard for the top-performing security companies. The Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) was born and was intended to signpost those looking for the services of a contract security company towards the very best of the best in the industry.

How The ACS Gold Standard Became Tarnished

Not wanting to be left in the “also ran” pile, many companies got onboard and, ticked all the required compliance boxes and handed over the prerequisite membership fees to the SIA. The big companies out there that use security officers also became aware of this new standard and started to insist that they only use ACS-approved service providers. Inevitably, this sudden reduction in potential clientele drove a whole legion of not-so-great security companies to look at how they too could attain the oh so desirable ACS approval.

It turns out that, as ACS compliance was so admin-focused, this admin can be tweaked and augmented to tick the required boxes, without any genuine positive changes to some awful company operating behaviours. So, what was a gold standard, slowly became a club that was successfully gate-crashed by some of the most dubious companies in the UK.

Seeing this, many companies made a very deliberate decision not to seek ACS approval. Many more companies decided that the cost of membership was not worth the potential benefits. Other companies had such good word-of-mouth recommendations and resulting organic growth that bothering to seek ACS approval was simply pointless.

The Current State Of The UK Security Industry

This leaves an interesting situation in today’s security industry. Many ACS company owners and leaders seem increasingly bitter that companies that may have been set up yesterday and appear to have zero contracts or employees are allowed to share an industry in which they have shed blood, sweat, and tears to achieve the most impressive ACS scores imaginable.

Figures, however, are undeniable. ACS member company numbers are falling. This leaves over 10,000 incorporated security companies that haven’t joined the ACS club, for whatever reason. I suspect that most of these do indeed have contracts, employ security officers, and were not set up yesterday.

10,000 companies or not, the traditional stakeholders in the UK security industry are, without exception, ACS-approved security companies, and they really don’t want anyone who hasn’t joined the club having a say in how the industry is run. It seems to many that most ACS company leaders are banging their fists on the desk, screaming, “But we are the best of the best, dammit, and we have a badge that proves it!” This is a big problem for some initiatives that genuinely seek to improve the security industry. Most recent and indeed, promising of these is the S12 Security Guarding Leadership Group.

Recommended Reading: Security Company Licensing In The UK: A Retrospective

The S12 Group: A Missed Opportunity For Inclusion?

The S12 Group was founded after a great deal of hard work by Carlisle Support Services CEO, Paul Evans, and it achieved a bit of a coup in that he had gained the ear, and ongoing support and engagement of, Dan Jarvis, the Government’s Security Minister. Unprecedented access to policymakers, no less. Exciting times.

There is, however, one huge problem that the S12 doesn’t seem particularly willing to address. Not a single non-ACS company has any representation on the S12 governing board. Dan Jarvis voiced his desire that the S12 become the inclusive and united voice of the security industry, able to advise and guide policy:

In a speech at the International Security Expo in London on 1st October 2025, he said: “I am very pleased to announce the formation of the S12, a new industry-led initiative to bring together various parts of the private security industry and speak to the government with one voice.” I’m not sure how much weight the Government will give to a body that has excluded any senior representation from over 10,000 companies, beyond open participation in their working groups.

Why Representation Matters

Alas, this isn’t really “one voice”. Companies that form the backbone and overwhelming majority of the UK security industry, non-ACS companies, seem to be the new prejudice among the traditional stakeholders, sadly now exclusively forming the S12. None of this is good for the industry, but appeals have fallen on deaf ears with the S12 leadership. For full transparency, seeing the wonderful potential of the S12, I applied to be their Chief of Staff, and I raised this issue at the interview.

Sadly, it didn’t seem to change much. We all hope this changes soon, but the recent announcement for nominations for the last 2 seats on their governing board certainly doesn’t encourage non-ACS security company participation.

UKSICA: A Voice For All Security Companies

There is, however, an organisation out there that is not ignoring the input and experience of those legions of non-ACS-approved security companies, and it seeks to help them improve their operation with advice and guidance. I am proud to have been invited onto the board of this group (voluntary and unpaid), which is the United Kingdom Security Industry Compliance Association or UKSICA for short.

Non-ACS companies can join the register at UKSICA and will gain access to advice, guidance, and support to help them simply be better. Companies that don’t want to jump through the ACS hoops can apply to the UKSICA for “verified company status, which simply means that a series of checks has taken place to ensure that a security company is run in a proper manner and is fully compliant with UK law, without exorbitant cost or administrative box ticking.

The UKSICA is new and still developing policies and procedures, but if you want to find out more and get involved, drop an email to info@uksica.org. UKSICA is a non-profit organisation simply looking to improve standards across the UK Security Industry, fight malpractice, and provide a voice for ALL UK security companies. No egos involved.

Professionalism Beyond The Badge

One thing worth noting: ACS approval was never meant to be the only marker of a professional operation. Proper staff vetting, robust hiring practices, and genuine investment in your workforce speak louder than any badge. Platforms like GuardPass exist precisely because the industry needed tools that work for everyone—not just those in the club.

In a security landscape that is evolving rapidly, driven by rising costs, increasing criminal sophistication, and relentless client expectations, UK security companies are under growing pressure to do more with less. Guarding contracts are harder fought, margins are thinner, and clients are asking smarter questions. It is against this backdrop that the intelligent provision of mobile CCTV systems is emerging not just as a technical offering, but as a strategic advantage.

Let’s be clear: mobile CCTV isn’t new. Car parks, construction sites, and remote locations have relied on these units for over a decade. But what has changed is the context and the expectation. Where once a mobile tower was a specialist hire item managed by a third party, it is now becoming a core competency for forward-thinking manned guarding providers.

At the same time, forward-thinking companies aren’t just adopting CCTV — they’re transforming their entire hiring approach. Tools like GuardPass are enabling security firms to rapidly hire pre-vetted, licensed officers and manage compliance at scale, freeing up operational bandwidth to explore value-added services like mobile CCTV.

So, what does it mean to offer mobile CCTV as a value-added service? And more importantly, how should it be integrated, priced, and pitched?

A Market Demanding More Than Guards

The traditional manned guarding model is under siege. While the physical presence of a uniformed officer still delivers psychological deterrence and practical intervention capability, the economics are challenging. Wage pressures, recruitment crises, and contractual volatility are squeezing providers. Technology has long been floated as the answer, but “tech” is a broad church, and some solutions are more viable than others.

Mobile CCTV, specifically rapid deployment towers and vehicle-mounted camera systems, offer something rare: tangible security benefit, with clear cost efficiency, and the optics of modernity that clients crave.

Whether used to supplement static guarding, cover temporary blind spots, or enable a remote monitoring model, mobile CCTV is flexible, scalable, and demonstrably effective. For companies willing to invest in capability, this service can transform a guarding tender into a total security solution.

Technical Capability Matters

It’s easy to buy a camera. It’s harder to offer a solution. Security firms venturing into mobile CCTV must treat it with the same operational seriousness as a guarding deployment.

This means:

Robust, weatherproof towers with battery, solar, or hybrid power.

Reliable 4G/5G connectivity for live streaming and remote access.

Gold analytics, motion detection, line crossing, and AI-assisted intruder recognition.

Integration with ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) services for real-time response.

Compliance with BS 8418 and the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.

The temptation to purchase a cheap kit and “bolt it on” as a sideline is real and dangerous. Clients can smell an opportunistic upsell. What they want is a security partner who understands the application of technology, not just the hardware.

Those who get it right, who invest in quality units, proper training, and back-end monitoring infrastructure, position themselves as true integrators. Those who cut corners? They’ll soon learn that tech reputation, like physical guarding, is earned with consistency, not slogans.

Commercial Models and Client Benefits

From a commercial standpoint, offering mobile CCTV enables security firms to shift from a purely hourly-rate model to blended service pricing. A typical scenario: a construction client requires 24/7 security. Previously, this meant one or two night guards, often at high cost and with limited coverage.

Now, the firm offers:

One mobile CCTV tower.

Remote monitoring via ARC.

Keyholding and mobile response backup.

The result? Enhanced perimeter coverage, quicker incident detection, and potentially lower overall cost to the client. For the security company, this means better margins, fewer staffing headaches, and a stronger case for long-term contract renewal.

This is not about replacing people with machines. It’s about giving people smarter tools and giving clients smarter options.

Use Cases: From Construction to Critical Infrastructure

The versatility of mobile CCTV cannot be overstated. While construction remains the most visible market, particularly with the rise in plant theft and vandalism, there are many other applications:

Vacant properties under management.

Events requiring short-term coverage.

Utility installations in remote or unmanned areas.

Transport and logistics yards, particularly during overnight operations.

In many of these cases, the ability to deploy a unit within hours and remove it without civil works or disruption is a key selling point. It’s the ultimate in flexible deterrence.

Moreover, the optics matter. Clients see a modern CCTV tower on site, branded with your company logo, and they associate it with proactive security. That perception of innovation translates into trust, and trust leads to retention.

Challenges and Considerations

Of course, none of this is plug-and-play. Firms looking to expand into mobile CCTV must consider:

Capital expenditure: Units cost thousands. Leasing is an option, but margins need to be managed carefully.

Monitoring: Who watches the cameras? Are you building your own ARC capability or partnering with an existing provider? Either option requires diligence.

Insurance and liability: What happens if footage is lost or a unit fails? Contracts must be watertight.

Training and maintenance: Staff need to know how to deploy, calibrate, and fault-diagnose. Neglecting this is a fast track to client dissatisfaction.

Then there’s the legal side, data protection, signage, and retention policies. Offering mobile CCTV means stepping into the world of surveillance law. Companies must be ready.

The Strategic View: Future-Proofing Your Service

Ultimately, mobile CCTV is more than a revenue stream. It’s a signal to your clients, your competitors, and your staff that your business understands the modern threat landscape. It says: we don’t just guard the gate; we secure the whole site.

In an industry where differentiation is rare and loyalty is fragile, this matters.

Clients are increasingly procurement-driven. They want security companies that offer blended, tech-enabled services. By integrating mobile CCTV into your core offering, not as a gimmick, but as a legitimate solution, you become harder to replace.

This is not just a trend. It’s part of the wider convergence of manned and electronic security, a convergence that the best companies are already embracing.

Mobile CCTV Is the Tool — Your Execution Is the Strategy

The provision of mobile CCTV systems as a value-added service is no longer optional for UK security companies seeking to stay relevant. It is a logical, lucrative, and forward-facing extension of the guarding model.

But, as with all tools, it’s only as good as the company wielding it. Those who invest wisely in hardware, training, and integration will find themselves ahead of the curve. Those who dabble or cut corners will be left behind.

In the words of many a seasoned professional: clients don’t want gadgets. They want outcomes. Mobile CCTV, deployed well, delivers them.

Powering Modern Security Through Better Hiring

As more firms expand their capabilities, success will depend not only on the tech they deploy but on the team they field. Whether you’re scaling up a mobile CCTV offering or modernising your manned guarding team, GuardPass is the all-in-one hiring solution built to support the security industry’s evolution. With fast, reliable access to compliant officers, GuardPass helps you stay agile, win more contracts, and deliver end-to-end security with confidence.
Technology, and specifically security technology, is advancing at an alarming rate, especially since the arrival of advanced AI systems. The good news is that most pundits believe there will always be a need for human interaction—or, at the very least, that the sort of sci-fi-level robotic devices required to, say, replace your average door supervisor in a busy club on a Saturday night are decades away and unlikely to be a cost-effective solution even then.

What we are seeing, however, is an increase in security technology to assist, rather than replace, security officers. Much of this is designed to save time and money, but a great deal of the innovations we are seeing can provide a safer environment than ever before. Let’s have a look at some of this security technology.

CCTV, But Not As We Know It

CCTV or Closed Circuit Television has been around for almost as long as TV itself. For decades, however, we put up with grainy pictures, awful recording systems and abysmal night-time or low-light performance. Things have improved dramatically over the last 30 years. We now have 4k cameras with fantastic IR low light image quality, PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras with amazing zoom levels, hard drive recording systems with a small box that replaces what would have been, 25 years ago, a VHS video recording system that needed 2 tapes per day, and a bookcase full, to store a month’s worth of recordings.

The big advance, however, is in facial recognition. Although accuracy is still not 100%, the ability to take a photo of a shoplifter and upload it to your CCTV system with an alert notification attached is helping security officers stop trouble at the door. This security technology is also being used for identifying troublemakers, wanted criminal suspects, and even helping to find missing persons.

A bit too much like “Big Brother”? Maybe. That debate continues, but the security technology is with us now. Worth reminding companies that if the CCTV system covers public spaces, or areas open to the public, then the CCTV operator, or person/s reviewing any recorded CCTV footage, will require a Security Industry Authority CCTV licence.

Recommended Reading: Effortless Compliance with GuardPass’s Licence Hub

Body Cams or Body Worn Video (BWV)

Due in no small part to the huge increase in violence faced by security workers on duty, and the need to provide evidence to defend or justify their actions, or prosecute offenders, BWV is becoming an increasingly common sight attached to the chests of door supervisors, event security, and response officers.

A recent survey indicated that BWV was the most effective form of deterrent against violence if the offender was made aware that their actions were being recorded. Most BWV units also have emergency alert buttons, programmed to alert a control room in the event of a wearer being assaulted and requiring assistance.

Again, this security technology can not be deployed without thought and planning, as systems have to be in place for the secure GDPR compliant storage of all recorded footage, and the review of that footage will, in most cases, need to be performed by an SIA public space surveillance licence holder. Speak to an expert before paying for a system and cameras.

Shift Management Systems

I am so old that I can remember booking on duty with a designated on-site telephone, using a big clockwork box with keys located in different places on site, to record my patrols, and anything noteworthy had to be reported via radio to base, or called in to a central control room later. Hourly check calls had to be phoned in to a control room, and we would receive random visits from a mobile supervisor at night to make sure we weren’t asleep, or wearing pyjamas, I kid you not. I’ve found security officers doing just that.

These days, the technology in your average mobile phone can do pretty much everything I mention above and more, and has made lone working safer than ever before. Logging in to your phone’s shift management system when you arrive at work will log you on duty, and GPS technology can prove exactly where you were when you logged on. Some systems require you to take a selfie to prove you are in full uniform.

Patrols can be logged automatically, and GPS confirms that you performed the patrol correctly without the need for checkpoints anywhere on site. If an officer leaves the site, GPS geofencing will alert the control room who will contact the officer to see what is going on. Reports can be submitted via the app, and photos included. Check calls can be made by just pressing a button.

Best of all, however, is the ability to covertly summon help if you’re under duress, or even activate an emergency “man down” procedure if the phone has been monitored to be in a prone position for a length of time, or if a check call or patrol is missed.

Behind the scenes, this software can be integrated with payroll to ensure the accuracy of salary payments, and can be used to raise a query if required. Data regarding patrols, shift booking on and off times, and incidents can also be analysed by management to prove SLAs are being met and accurately generate figures for KPIs with a few keystrokes.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

As mentioned earlier, violence against security workers is at scandalous levels, as is the disturbing rise in knife crime.

Many companies are now choosing to equip their officers with stab or slash-proof clothing. This can range from gloves or a protective sleeve for the forearm to full hard body armour in some high-risk deployments. These things are nowhere near as big and bulky as they used to be, and can be worn under a work shirt easily.

Knife and Firearm Detection

It is a sad indictment on our society that “walk-through metal detectors” or “knife arches” are now commonplace at the entrances to many sites and events. Over the years, however, we have become far more used to door supervisors or security at transport hubs using metal detecting “wands” to look for potentially dangerous articles when entering their premises.

Technology has moved on here, too, however. There is now equipment that can identify concealed weapons by the way clothing sits, or by the metal composition, giving an instant and reliable alert if a firearm or knife is detected.

No “Terminator” Just Yet

Several companies are producing robotic security patrol devices in a variety of forms. One of my favourite posts on social media was of a shopping centre patrol robot that somewhat resembled a litter bin with lights on, lying in an ornamental fish pond. The tag line “unable to cope with its mundane existence, the security robot took its own life” did cause a chuckle.

There are many more serious bits of kit out there, however. The US military uses robotic dogs armed with high-visibility cameras and communications hardware to patrol base perimeters and instantly alert a control room if an issue is found. After recent issues with a Palestinian terrorist group getting into an RAF base and causing damage to aircraft, maybe the Ministry of Defence should be looking at similar kit? #JustSaying.

What The Future Holds

Advances in facial recognition applications are moving rapidly. Combining this with mobile technology presents interesting possibilities.

Violence is also a growing concern, and new safety tech will certainly be incorporated into more regular clothing for security officers. Voice recognition and more intuitive AI will also mean that reports can be dictated and corrected without the need for a traditional keyboard, further adding to reliance on mobile technology. Robot security officers? Until they can identify a criminal or potential hostile reconnaissance suspect, help a member of the public with directions, smile while dealing with idiots, run at 20 mph to detain a villain, and take a punch in the face without needing a trip back to the factory to fix, humans will always be better.

With over 800 SIA ACS-approved UK security companies and somewhere in the region of 13,000 non-ACS companies, there is a massive amount of competition for every contract. When the crowd is so large, finding a way to stand out can be immensely difficult, and more so with the ever evolving security company marketing strategies. Difficult, but absolutely essential if your company is going to have a chance of survival, is such a gladiatorial industry.

So, with margins so tight, you’re not going to have a fistful of cash to throw at PR, advertising, or pitching a stand at expos or conferences. Top-name consultants and commercial directors are worth their weight in gold, but will cost not far off that to engage. Whatever security company marketing you need to do must be somewhere between ‘cost-effective’ and downright ‘cheap’.

What are your options? Alternative advertising.

Social Media Output

Make sure you utilise social media for brand building to maximum effect. Lots and lots of content showing ultra-smart-looking security officers in your company uniforms. Celebrate all your company wins. Find someone who can spend a couple of hours a week creating and publishing effective content on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and do not let it slip. Regular posts on all networks will help you gain followers.

Also, identify potential customers or target markets, and follow them. If they have a use for your services, then they may follow you back, and they’ll become aware of how great your company is by the great output you publish.

Intelligent Online Advertising

Google ads and YouTube advertising are relatively cheap, and best of all, you can apply a range of filters and parameters to ensure that your ads reach the target demographic.

I went through a phase a couple of years ago when every time I looked at anything security-related on YouTube, I was met halfway through with a short ad from a company called Region Security. Kudos to them. They were not a big outfit, but I saw so many of their promotional videos, I could not help but remember their name and company logo.

Use AI to Assist Your Security Company Marketing

We have all seen horrible websites and poorly written job adverts, dripping with grammatical mistakes, spelling disasters and generally clunky wording. Do yourself a favour, especially if the complexities of the English language are problematic, or it is not your first language.

Run what you want to say through ChatGPT and ask it to rewrite your ideas, also adding keywords designed to engage the reader and phrases designed to emphasise the excellence of your services and drive a call to action. (Feel free to rewrite this in a clearer prompt.) AI, used correctly, will not just make your ads and content sound better; it can apply psychology to help attract potential customers.

Recommended Read: How to Write the Perfect Job Ad

Nominate Your People for Industry Awards

Most security industry awards allow “self-nomination”, and getting on shortlists, or even winning, is a great way to showcase your company’s quality and achievements. The big awards are free to enter, and will involve an online application which can take an hour or two, especially if you need to gather supporting documentation.

Attend the events. Take lots of photos, and get them out across social media and on your website and staff newsletter.

Recommended Read: Why You Should Enter Security Awards

Be Different and Distinctive

Deploying officers in ultra-smart uniforms, with a memorable company logo on the tie or breast pocket, and a catchy corporate salutation, will do a lot to get you noticed fast. A couple of decades ago, before the SIA rocked up and the industry fell apart, there was a security company called SabreWatch. They had a huge amount of High Street retail contracts, and their officers were instantly identifiable as the uniforms were very ‘US law enforcement’ based.

These officers were also very well paid and had to complete a week-long training and assessment course before they were signed up. Everyone knew SabreWatch, and they were always regarded as the best in the business. They stood out and did something different.

Give Your Officers an Advantage

We all know that mandatory SIA training varies wildly in quality, and worse of all, there are a lot of security workers out there who have acquired an SIA licence with no training at all. So, send a clear message to potential clients that your officers are genuinely well-trained, knowledgeable and skilled security professionals. My friends at an excellent NW London-based security company, Pro Sentry, do something different that has always impressed me, so consider doing something similar.

All their new security officers have to undertake and pass an online training syllabus consisting of over a dozen advanced training courses. Failure to do this before the end of the 3-month probationary period will lead to the dismissal of the officer. An excellent way to ensure that you are deploying staff who can both do the job and enhance your corporate reputation. Best of all, the online courses are cheap to utilise.

Guerilla Marketing

I have seen one or two companies turn to ‘guerrilla marketing’. Frankly this is going to be more effective to raise interest from the TikTok generation and probably won’t generate the positive publicity you want, so maybe reconsider your cunning plan, to set fire to a 3 x life sized cardboard cutout of Kier Starmer in the middle of your local shopping centre, and when the press arrive, pull down your trousers to display your security company name and logo on your boxer shorts, as you get carted off by the law.

Why This Matters for GuardPass Users

In today’s crowded security market, the companies that win are the ones that show up with a professional image and a high-performing team. That’s where GuardPass comes in.
Final Thought

Whatever route you choose to build company brand awareness, don’t lose sight of the need for integrity and maintenance of professional standards, or your company will become known for all the wrong reasons, and you may have to go through the costly process of rebranding. Good luck.

As someone who has spent over three decades in the UK’s security industry, rising through the ranks from frontline officer to senior leadership in successful guarding companies, I’ve seen firsthand how reputation and brand awareness can make or break a business. In a field where trust, reliability, and professionalism are non-negotiable, brand awareness isn’t just about visibility; it’s about how you’re perceived. This is why it’s essential for you to know how to build a brand reputation.

Here I share some practical insights and strategies for creating positive brand awareness within the UK security guarding industry, based on real-world experience and some very hard-earned lessons.

1. Know That Your People Are Your Brand

It may sound like a cliché, but your frontline staff are the face of your business. Every time a security officer interacts with a client, the public, or a stakeholder, they’re creating an impression and shaping your brand. That’s why recruiting the right people and investing in their ongoing development is vital.

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) sets baseline standards for licensing, but to truly stand out, you need to go beyond that. Prioritise soft skills: communication, situational awareness, and conflict resolution, just as much as technical capability. We also implement monthly refreshers, toolbox talks, and quarterly leadership training for supervisors.

An empowered, well-trained team doesn’t just perform better—they naturally promote your brand by embodying professionalism and competence.

Recommended Reading: Combating Burnout In Security Teams

2. Be Consistent

Professionalism isn’t just about how your officers behave; it’s about consistency. Uniforms should be clean, branded, and well-fitted. Vehicles, if used, must be clean and clearly marked. Even your documentation, from assignment instructions to incident reports, should reflect quality and consistency.

We introduced a strict brand guideline document several years ago that covers everything from tone of voice in emails to signage on temporary security posts. Why? Because these details build trust. When clients see consistency, they perceive reliability. That perception is the cornerstone of a positive brand reputation.

3. Track Standards & Accreditations

Increasingly, these days, compliance and credibility go hand in hand, and many third-party accreditations carry real weight. Becoming an SIA Approved Contractor (ACS) opens your company up to the many potential clients that, perhaps somewhat naively, demand it, but don’t stop there. ISO 9001 (Quality Management) is pretty much universally required, ISO 14001 (Environmental), and ISO 45001 (Health & Safety) are both useful and indicate a commitment to excellence.

Use these accreditations as marketing tools, but also as internal benchmarks. Let your clients and staff know that you’re not just compliant, you’re committed to continual improvement.

4. Build Relationships With Your Clients

Too many security firms focus on winning contracts and then forget about relationship building. But brand awareness isn’t just about reaching new clients—it’s about creating advocates. That includes facilities managers, local authorities, event organisers, and other stakeholders.

Make a point of staying in touch with clients beyond operational discussions. Whether it’s a quarterly review meeting, a client appreciation event, or just a check-in call, relationship building fosters loyalty. A happy client is far more likely to recommend your services, and that kind of word-of-mouth marketing is worth its weight in gold in our industry.

Recommended Reading: Building Security Client Trust

5. Corporate Social Responsibility

Security can be viewed as a localised service. Your officers are deployed in towns, cities, and neighbourhoods where community trust matters. There is enormous brand value to be gained in engaging with the communities you serve. That might include sponsoring a local football team, supporting charity events, or participating in local business forums. (CSR is also a great source of ACS audit points.)

A company I worked with a while back partnered with a local council to deliver free security workshops for small businesses impacted by crime. Not only did it generate goodwill, but it also positioned us as a proactive and responsible security provider.

6. Use Social Media to Maximum Effect

Historically, the security industry has been behind the curve on digital marketing, but in today’s world, your online presence is often the first port of call for potential clients, employees, and even regulators—on those ACS audits again.

Start with a professional, mobile-optimised website. Make sure it’s clear who you are, what services you provide, and what makes you different. But don’t stop there, use content marketing to demonstrate thought leadership. Share case studies, industry commentary, safety tips, and client testimonials. Spread the good news about your company far and wide with lots of photos and visually appealing graphics.

Don’t just get bored and stop publishing content. Regular corporate posts encourage engagement and will increase your follower count and industry footprint. I also found LinkedIn to be a powerful platform for B2B engagement. Regular posts showcasing team achievements, new contracts, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of daily operations help humanise the brand and foster trust.

7. Create a Strong Company Culture

Internal culture and external reputation are deeply connected. If your staff feel valued, they’re more likely to speak positively about the company both online and offline. That, obviously, affects how your brand is perceived externally.

Things like quarterly employee recognition schemes, regular team-building events, and an open-door policy at all managerial levels are helpful. When people feel heard and appreciated, they become ambassadors for your brand.

It is also wise to monitor sites like Indeed and Glassdoor—not just to manage reputation, but to understand how staff perceive the business. Feedback, both positive and negative, should help drive internal improvements and company evolution.

8. Utilise Crisis Management & PR

In security, things sometimes go wrong, incidents occur, mistakes happen, and the best, most in-depth planning cannot foresee every eventuality. How you handle these situations can define your brand. I would find it wise to adopt a “respond, not react” policy. That means acknowledging issues quickly, taking responsibility where needed, and putting corrective actions in place.

Transparency builds trust. Whether it’s a security breach, a staffing shortfall, or a miscommunication, owning the narrative helps protect and even enhance your brand reputation. Never put out definitive statements until you have the facts, however, and never make assumptions.

9. Build Strategic Partnerships

Strong collaborations can be brand-enhancing, whether it’s partnering with technology firms to deliver hybrid guarding solutions or aligning with cleaning or facilities management providers to offer bundled services.

Most companies will experience an uplift through partnerships that allow them to present a full-spectrum solution. These collaborations position you as forward-thinking and client-focused, and this diversity provides an increased level of business resilience.

10. Assess the Effectiveness of Your Initiatives

Lastly, treat brand awareness like any other business objective—track it. Use client surveys, social media analytics, and even informal feedback to understand how your company is perceived.

Most companies now use annual “Client Confidence Surveys” with questions about professionalism, communication, and service delivery. The feedback from these can be used to tweak everything, from training to marketing campaigns.

Building Your Brand Reputation: A Long-Term Investment

Creating positive brand awareness in the UK security guarding industry isn’t about gimmicks or flashy campaigns. It’s about authenticity, consistency, and relationships. It’s about being known for doing the basics exceptionally well—officers showing up on time, dressing professionally, communicating clearly, and solving problems proactively.

It takes time, effort, and a genuine commitment to excellence. But the payoff is loyal clients, dedicated staff, and a resilient brand reputation. Well worth the investment in time.

Reputations can be ruined overnight, and your brand is your bond. Learn how to build your brand reputation, and then guard it fiercely.

Every security company owner knows that it is immensely hard to find professional, well-trained security officers who have received proper security training. A glut of personnel working illegally on student visas or who have been imported by criminal gangs and should never be anywhere near the security industry, makes the genuinely engaged frontline security officer ever harder to find.

So, how do you find these diamonds in the sand?

The Value of a Dedicated Security Hiring Platform

Firstly, using the premier, security industry-dedicated recruitment system is going to be a big help in sorting the wheat from the chaff and finding the best available candidates.

That system is GuardPass, obviously. Have a look at our security hiring platform for employers for more information. Also, check out this resource on how GuardPass helps solve these top security hiring challenges.

Thinking Outside the Box: Attracting Talent from Other Industries

When you have exhausted the pool of candidates and still can’t find the people you need, what’s next?

Many companies are now coming to the realisation that some ‘out of the box’ thinking is needed to find the people that they need. One of the new initiatives that is gaining traction is recruiting from outside the security industry, finding the talent that has become disillusioned with logistics, catering or whatever gig they have been doing.

Frontline security industry work is highly responsible, and the protection of people and property could not be a more honourable job, so it should be an attractive alternative proposition. The big barrier to moving to the security industry is, of course, the cost of training and licensing.

This issue is being largely overcome by security companies offering to pay the cost of the mandatory training course and SIA licence fee for potential candidates who have the attitude and skills that would tend to make them a highly successful security officer.

This is a major financial outlay and indeed a risk for employers, but this is largely being circumvented by making it clear in an employment contract that if an employee that has had their training and licence paid for by the company, leaves within 6 months, then the cost of training and licence will be recovered from final pay, or must be refunded by other pre agreed means.

6 months’ worth of full-time work does not equate to a huge financial profit for any security officer’s services, but it will cover the training and licensing outlay without too much stress on the bottom line.

Partnering with a Trusted Training Network

Training network Get Licensed is uniquely placed to assist and is able to arrange corporate security training for your new staff at dozens of venues across the UK, offering assistance to companies and even corporate bulk booking discounts!

Final Thoughts: Train the Right People Into the Right Roles

In a nutshell, when you can’t find the decent calibre of security officers you need, find decent people, and turn them into security officers! I very much hope that as the SIA stamps out malpractice and fraud in the UK security industry, we will see a lot of the dead wood removed. In the meantime, this would seem to be an effective treatment for what we all hope is a minor short-term illness.

Invest in People, Not Just Papers: Futureproof Your Security Workforce

The security industry is evolving, and it’s the companies that invest in potential, not just credentials, that will build the most resilient teams. Supporting SIA training for promising candidates is more than a stop-gap; it’s a long-term solution to a chronic hiring challenge.

If you’re ready to futureproof your workforce with licensed, motivated security professionals, GuardPass makes recruitment faster, simpler, and compliant. With instant access to pre-vetted candidates, automated licence checks, and built-in compliance tools, you can focus on what matters: building a high-performing security team.

Starting a security company today in the UK is a vastly different undertaking than it was 10, 20, or even 30 years ago. The fundamentals of protecting people, property, and reputation remain the same, but the environment we operate in has evolved — and continues to evolve — at an unprecedented pace.

As someone who has dedicated three decades to the guarding sector, I’ve seen both the best and worst of this industry. Security company start-ups bring fresh energy and innovation, but they also face an uphill battle. From navigating SIA regulations to winning contracts and retaining staff, the barriers to success are significant.

Below, I examine what I believe are the biggest challenges faced by new entrants in today’s UK security industry — and offer some insights on how to navigate them.

Breaking Through a Crowded Market

The UK security industry is saturated. With over 4,000 SIA-approved contractors and countless unapproved operators, standing out is difficult. Many start-ups enter the industry under the impression that reliability and professionalism alone will win them business. Unfortunately, that’s just the baseline. Clients expect more, and they often default to larger, well-established players unless you can offer clear, compelling value.

Security company start-ups must answer a difficult question: What makes us different?

Whether it’s niche market knowledge, use of cutting-edge technology, or superior customer service, start-ups must identify and communicate their USP clearly and relentlessly.

Navigating Regulations and Compliance

SIA licensing, ACS accreditation, GDPR, employment law, health and safety standards — the compliance landscape is complex and constantly shifting. Getting it wrong isn’t just expensive; it can destroy a fledgling business’s reputation before it’s even off the ground.

Too many security company start-ups underestimate the time and cost involved in staying compliant. Some cut corners, only to be caught out later. Others simply lack the experience to implement the correct processes from day one. I always advise new business owners to either invest in experienced SIA compliance personnel or outsource this function to trusted consultants until they can bring it in-house.

Security Recruitment and Retention in a Tight Labour Market

Good security officers are hard to find and even harder to keep. This isn’t a new challenge, but it’s intensified in recent years. Post-pandemic shifts in employment patterns, rising expectations around work/life balance, and cost-of-living pressures mean security workers are more selective than ever.

High staff turnover is common, especially in the event and mobile sectors. If you are not already using the GuardPass system to recruit security officers, I highly recommend you check it out!

For start-ups, this creates a Catch-22. Without a solid pipeline of work, it’s hard to promise regular hours. Without regular hours, it’s hard to attract and retain good officers. Gold start-ups tackle this by building strong candidate relationships early and offering perks beyond pay, such as flexible shifts, transparent communication, and prompt payroll.

Recommended Read: 5 Tips to Attract Security Talent

Winning Contracts Without a Track Record

Procurement departments are risk-averse. Most prefer to stick with suppliers they know, or those with proven experience. This makes it extremely difficult for new firms to secure meaningful contracts, especially in regulated environments like government buildings, transport hubs, or critical infrastructure.

Security company start-ups must be realistic: major public-sector tenders are unlikely in year one. Instead, success often begins with small, local contracts. Proving reliability and quality on a small scale creates the references and case studies needed to pursue larger opportunities. Partnerships and subcontracting can also provide a valuable stepping stone.

Cash Flow and Financial Discipline

Security is a labour-heavy business with tight margins. Most contracts are invoiced monthly, often with 30, 60 or even 90-day payment terms. Meanwhile, staff expect to be paid weekly. This creates a cash flow pinch that has sunk many start-ups.

Financial planning is not optional. Even a profitable business can collapse if it runs out of cash. Accurate forecasting, prudent budgeting, and a robust credit control process are essential from day one. I also recommend that start-ups maintain a contingency fund or access to flexible finance, particularly if pursuing rapid growth.

Insurance and Legal Exposure

Insurance is another area where corners must not be cut. Public liability, employer’s liability, vehicle cover (if doing mobile patrols), and professional indemnity policies are the bare minimum. The right cover protects not just the company’s finances but also its reputation. Many clients won’t even consider a provider without robust, documented insurance arrangements.

Equally important is understanding legal exposure. A poorly worded contract, a lack of documented training, or an unclear assignment instruction can all lead to disputes, injury claims, or regulatory breaches. Experienced legal support may seem like a luxury for a security start-up, but it can save thousands in the long run.

Technology Expectations

Today’s clients expect more than boots on the ground. They want real-time reporting, GPS tracking, and evidence of performance. Large security firms have invested heavily in technology platforms to meet these expectations. Start-ups must find ways to compete, even if on a smaller scale.

The good news is that cloud-based solutions have made guard tour systems, incident reporting apps, and scheduling software more affordable than ever. But tech alone won’t impress; how it’s used, integrated, and explained to the client is what counts.

Cybersecurity and Data Protection

It’s no longer just about physical security. Every security company now handles personal data, staff details, client information, and CCTV footage. This makes them a target for cybercriminals and subject to stringent data protection rules under GDPR.

Start-ups can’t afford to be complacent. Even a small breach can trigger fines and reputation damage. Basic cybersecurity hygiene, secure systems, regular updates, staff training, and professional hosting must be part of the business DNA from day one.

Maintaining Quality Under Pressure

The moment a security company start-up wins a few contracts, it enters a new danger zone: overextension. Taking on too much, too quickly, often leads to service failure. Missed patrols, untrained officers, communication breakdowns, these can undo hard-won client trust in an instant.

It’s essential to scale sustainably. Deliver excellence on what you already have before chasing the next contract. Quality, not quantity, is what will build long-term success and referrals.

Running a successful security company in today’s climate is not impossible, but it is hugely demanding. Passion, purpose, and professionalism are essential, but not enough on their own. Start-ups must be strategic, compliant, financially disciplined, and above all, client-focused.

After 30 years in the UK security industry, I still believe in its value and its future. New blood is vital. But it must be prepared. The best advice I can give any aspiring security entrepreneur is this: do your homework, seek advice from those who’ve walked the path before you, and never lose sight of the responsibility we carry.

Maybe not the best paid, usually chronically overworked, and sometimes used and abused by senior strategic management, operations managers, or whatever title their employers use, are without doubt the most critically important roles in any security guarding services company.

No role in the security industry will be as varied, involve so much travel, or shoulder more responsibility. Many security operations managers will be promoted from supervisory roles after they have stood out from the crowd for organisational ability or enthusiasm. Most will look after a portfolio of sites, normally somewhere between 10 and 30, depending on geographical location, type, and client requirements.

The Two Core Responsibilities of a Security Operations Manager

The security operations manager will have numerous duties and responsibilities, but the two key functions will never change:

To develop and maintain an excellent professional relationship with the client’s management.

To ensure all security officers working for you are motivated, are performing well, and that their welfare needs are addressed in a timely fashion.

No small ask, and as you can see, failure in either of these basic responsibilities can lead to huge damage to the business, hence the absolutely critical importance of the role.

The Importance of Structured Onboarding and Training

Enthusiasm and past performance, however, do not make a great operations manager. Woe betide the security company that hires or promotes a new operations manager and just lets them ‘get on with it’. A new operations manager will, at the very least, require a couple of weeks shadowing an experienced, existing team member to get a feel for the way a new company works and what it expects.

Most of the best security companies, recognising the importance of the position, will create some form of professional development plan, which will include dedicated training to absolutely ensure that the operations manager has all the skills and knowledge they will need to cope with the many and varied challenges that they will face.

Check out this guide on smooth onboarding processes to facilitate hiring.

Key Duties and Daily Responsibilities

So, what will an operations manager find themselves doing on a daily basis? This list should give you some idea of the breadth of duties that will be performed on a regular basis, but is by no means conclusive:

Manage Client Relationships

Regular, at least weekly, site progress visits and discussions with client management.

Identifying and advising on service improvement ideas.

Providing subject matter expert guidance to clients on industry news and best practices.

Develop an in-depth knowledge of all contractual agreements within your portfolio, ensuring that all service-level agreements are met at all times.

Monitoring agreed contract KPIs and ensuring that the security service provided meets or exceeds all reasonable client expectations.

Liaising with your operations director and client leadership to arrange monthly KPI assessment and progress meetings.

Investigating and reporting on any incident involving contract security on any site in your portfolio.

Keeping site Assignment Instructions and related paperwork up to date.

Ensuring that all equipment provided for security use is present and operational.

Recommended Read: Prioritising Client Relationships

Facilitate Security Officer Welfare & Performance

Performing final interviews of all security officers recruited for your sites.

Performing employee incident investigations.

Performing employee disciplinary hearings.

Advising HR on post-hearing disciplinary actions.

Ensuring that all new starters have had a company induction session.

Ensuring that all new starters have had a site induction and suitable training.

Perform and record regular face-to-face welfare meetings with all security officers.

Tips for Security Operations Managers

Ideally, face-to-face welfare meetings for every security officer should take place at least once per month. If not possible, then an absolute maximum gap of 2 months should be observed. As a last resort, a telephone welfare check on a monthly basis should be performed if you can’t get to see an officer. This usually requires a morning at the end of each month set aside to ensure you have at least spoken to all of your people.

Make yourself available to all security staff to address and resolve any welfare issues reported. (It is worth noting that the best contract/operations managers make themselves the single port of call for all routine staff enquiries, including pay queries, uniform issues and leave applications. Nothing builds respect faster than dealing with your employees’ issues diligently and in a timely manner.)

Identify enthusiastic and capable security officers who may want or deserve advancement, and place them on appropriate professional development plans. The importance of this can not be overstated, as nothing boosts morale or engenders loyalty more than promoting worthy staff.

Perform regular ‘toolbox talks’. These are short, on-site, training sessions and can be on a variety of relevant subjects such as powers of arrest, dealing with trespassers, talking to the media, dealing with social media ‘auditors’, any new site rules, or any changes to SIA licensing or regulations.

Managing Time, Risk and Integrity

As you can see, there is far more to the job than getting on with your staff and impressing clients. Time management and accurate record-keeping are essential skills.

You will probably need to give a short monthly presentation to your company management, detailing what you have been doing, and have accurate figures to hand. Meticulous record keeping is also potentially job and contract saving if you need to defend against allegations of failings or professional negligence.

Thankfully, this doesn’t happen often, but dubious security companies have been known to pass brown envelopes full of cash to client representatives for their assistance in sabotaging a contract so that their company can win it at renewal time. If you can disprove malicious allegations against your company, it may not save the contract, but it will highlight the suspect behaviour of the accuser.

The Buzz of Operations Management

So, operations management can be tough. It is certainly highly responsible. But, and this is felt by all good ops managers, there is a distinct ‘buzz’ when you solve a big problem or are praised by a client for your exceptional work. That buzz is addictive and is the main reason that so many top managers stay in this role way past the point at which they would have been promoted to operations director.

If you love variety, enjoy problem solving, have great communication skills, and know how to interact with people at all professional levels, maybe this role is for you.

Empower Your Security Operations Manager with GuardPass
